What Is the Most Effective Allergy Test?

During an allergy test, a small amount of a suspected allergen is placed on or below the skin in order to see if an allergic reaction develops. There are three types of skin tests:

Skin Prick Test — Skin prick tests are performed by placing a small amount of a solution containing a possible allergen on the skin, which is then followed by a series of needle pricks to allow the solution to enter the skin. If the skin develops a red, raised itchy area known as a wheal, it typically means that the person is allergic to that allergen. This is called a positive reaction.

Intradermal Test — During an intradermal allergy test, a small amount of the allergen solution is injected into the skin. When a substance does not cause a reaction in the skin prick test but is still suspected as an allergen for that person, an intradermal allergy test may be performed. The intradermal test is more sensitive than the skin prick test but is more likely to produce a false-positive result, meaning that the person does not actually have symptoms to that allergen.

Skin Patch Test — For a skin patch test, the allergen solution is placed on a pad that is taped to the skin for up to 72 hours. This test is used to detect a skin allergy called contact dermatitis and is known to produce accurate results.

The allergy test that is largely considered the most effective is the skin prick test. It is also the most common type of allergy test performed. Skin prick tests are typically the most accurate and affordable way to confirm a case of allergies. They are a simple, safe and quick test, providing results in under 20 minutes.

It is strongly recommended to receive an allergy test if you are exhibiting symptoms related to allergies, such as runny nose, watery or itchy eyes, itchy skin, hives or rashes. If symptoms are present after eating a certain type of food, it is imperative to get tested for allergies as soon as possible. On the other hand, if you are not experiencing any allergic-type symptoms, it is not recommended to receive an allergy test.
